What better way to spend a couple hours than out on the ocean watching the worlds largest mammals frolic on their annual journey up and down the eastern coast. "Downunder" is a purpose built wide body Catamaran to provide you with the smoothest and safest ride, and the biggest amount of deck space to stake your claim on a piece of ocean. With a maximum of 12 passengers there is no jostling for a rail position and everyone can get as close to the action as they want to.Dqownunder has a proper flushing toilet, seats all round and a solid roof over the entire deck for shade so you are sure to enjoy your day. Dont forget your hat and sunnies and your camera too!
We know that whale watching can be a hungry/ thirsty game so we have equipped Downunder with a good supply of tea, coffee, bikkies, softdrink and bottled water. For a small extra charge you can also purchase a selection of snacks sweet treats. Alternatively feel free to bring your own food and drinks (NO GLASS please). As Downunder is not licenced we are unable to sell alcohol but you are welcome to BYO (sensible quantities please and NO GLASS). All we ask is you bring your supplies in an esky just big enough to hold them so we keep the deck space clear.
Our whale watching trips head out from the marina and cruise down the Tweed River to its mouth at the Coral Sea. Once across the Tweed Bar we head for one of our favourite spots to try our luck. On the way we often see dolphins and sea turtles and if you keep your eyes peeled maybe even a big stingray. During the trip we will move to a couple of different locations, depending on the weather and where the whales are. By law we are not allowed to chase the whales or go too close to them but being curious creatures they will often come very close to the boat.
Downunder is a Bruce Harris built wide body Shark cat, 9.85m long and 4.4m wide with a gross tonnage of 11t and powered by twin Fiat 250kW inboard diesel engines. She is registered in 2C survey and carries all the safety equipment required by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) including a 16 man coastal liferaft. All the crew on Downunder are fully licenced by AMSA (including our deckies) and are trained and regularly drilled in first aid, firefighting and survival at sea so you can be assured that in the rare event of unforseen circumstances occurring you are in the best hands possible.
Our standard departure time for the whale watching trip is 1400 (2pm). If you would prefer a morning trip give us a call and we can see if we can fit ypu in around our fishing charters. We will confirm with you the day before your charter what time we are leaving. We ask you to be at the Tweed Marina a minimum of 15min before your trip departs so we can get the housekeeping and paperwork out of the way and give you a full 2.5 hours on the water.
